United Arab Emirates have already secured their ODI status, but that is a job half done. While they’ll be pretty happy with what they’ve achieved so far in the tournament, they’ll three more wins to get closer to World Cup qualification. They’ll be up against Scotland who have been brilliant in the tournament. Scotland finished their Group B campaign on a strong note where they tied with Zimbabwe. They won three matches out of four and finished with 7 points, separated from Zimbabwe just by Net Run Rate. UAE, on the other hand, just sneaked into the top three in Group A and will be looking to spin their magic to start their super six campaign with a win.
Scotland
Scotland have battled the odds and beating Afghanistan in the fashion they did was an achievement in itself. Having said that, their batting has largely been inconsistent. More often than not, they’ve relied on one or two batsmen to get them home and it has paid off so far. It was Calum McLeod against Afghanistan, Matthew Cross in the second, Kyle Coetzer in the third, and Richie Berrington almost got them through against Zimbabwe.
Although Scotland will be overall happy with the way things have panned out, they’ll be ruing the fact that they had to share points with Zimbabwe in their last group game. They were well and truly ahead and driving the game beautifully before they lost two quick wickets.
They pace bowling is arguably in the form of their life, Michael Leask remains the lone warrior to handle the spin department. On a pitch that is expected to be slow and turn square, his role will be vital. Scotland have so far ridden on individual brilliance rather than team effort. While that has paid off so far, they’d need to find a balance which can take them to the ultimate prize of the competition.
United Arab Emirates
UAE will be celebrating after securing an ODI status for four years. However, they have a bigger goal ahead that is to qualify for the World Cup. While it appears to be an improbable case, it certainly cannot be ruled out.
After having qualified for the super six, UAE will be confident of defeating Scotland in the opening game of the round especially with their spinners in terrific form. Rohan Mustafa, their skipper, has already picked up a fifer and the others haven’t held back either.
Chirag Suri has been around for a while now and he already has a big knock to his name in the tournament. Suri and Mustafa have been two pillars or UAE’s success and a lot will ride on them. With home-like conditions and batsmen in form, they can really surprise the favorites in the pool, let alone Scotland.
Our Prediction
It’s been even stevens if we see last five head to head encounter between the two sides. Scotland has won three while UAE two with all the games going down to the wire. It is the clash between Scottish individual brilliance and UAE’s spinners. Considering the current form of the quick bowlers and county experience of Scotland, they are more likely to emerge triumphant here.
