We are into the final day of Group Stage in ICC World Cup Qualifiers and it is still wide open in both the groups. While the fate of Afghanistan and Hong Kong is to be decided in Group B, two out of Netherlands, Ireland, and UAE will go through from Group A. Ireland and UAE will meet at Old Hararians Cricket Ground, Harare. For Ireland and UAE the equation is pretty simple, winner goes through. Things will get interesting if Netherlands beats West Indies otherwise both Ireland and UAE will go through to the next stage. Regardless to the result of Netherlands and Windies game, both teams will like to register a win and go into the Super Six stage with two extra points.
Ireland
Ireland had a pretty bright tournament before they met West Indies on their last game. After having West Indies on the mat, they let them score 257 which eventually proved to be a little too much. The new ball bowlers bowled brilliantly in the conditions conducive for fast-bowling.
Both Boyd Rankin and Tim Murtagh were phenomenal up front, but the former was hit for a few in the death overs. Pitch had slowed down a touch and batting wasn’t easy on pitch that was assisting bowlers. William Porterfield and Paul Stirling fell cheaply and Gary Wilson followed them to the hut. Ed Joyce compiled a beautiful innings and took the team closer to the target with the ‘O Brien brothers. However, his innings was cut short by Roach who picked KO Brien as well.
Overall, the Irish team is one of the most balanced side in the tournament. They’ll have a lot to ponder over their loss to West Indies, but they are are well and truly capable to bounce back to the winnings ways.
United Arab Emirates
UAE are in a position where they have their fate in their own hands. A win would take them through, but as per the head to head between they’ll have a steep ask ahead. In the last five games between them, UAE haven’t won any. Furthermore, four out of five games have been rather one-sided.
In this tournament, UAE have performed better than they have in the past. Their latest win came against Netherlands where the skipper Rohan Mustafa bowled beautifully. UAE restricted Netherlands to a total of 177 runs. These sort of totals can be tricky to chase sometimes, but a composed innings by Chirag Suri helped UAE to get to the target without any discomfort.
UAE have improved a lot in recent times with the results clearly visible in their last few matches. They played well against Netherlands and the coach and skipper will be hoping for a similar performance if they have to beat the men in green.
Our Prediction
It’s going to be a tough game for UAE and stats prove that. Ireland have a history of good wins over UAE and with the same team, it is a hard task in front of UAE. They are capable of causing an upset, but considering the experience gap and teams on paper, Ireland are more likely to win here at Harare.
