Karachi Kings defeated Islamabad United in a must-win game to make it through to the next stage, knocking the Sultans out of the tournament; they will once again take on United in the Qualifier match at Dubai on 18th March. Islamabad United topped the table with 14 points and will fight hard to survive the Kings’ onslaught; it needs to be seen if the Kings, who finished on the 2nd position with 11 points, can repeat their winning performance to cause an upset here on Sunday. It’s been an exciting tournament and we could see many fireworks here in the Dubai stadium before the action shifts to Pakistan.
Islamabad United
Batting first against the Kings in the last league match of the season, the hard-hitting batting line-up faltered right from the beginning and they could muster only 124 runs before getting all-out. Asif Ali top-scored with 34 while Walton scored 21 runs to get the scoreboard ticking. Alex Hales and Duminy failed to impress and bit the dust early in the innings. The bowlers had a tough task at hand, and they couldn’t defend the lowly total against a determined Kings’ unit. Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Steve Finn dismissed one opponent each, but the others couldn’t contain them and lost the match by 7 wickets.
Against Gladiators, Faheem Ashraf, who has been consistently doing well, took 3-19 to contain the opponents; speedster Amad Butt also took 2-30 while Samit Patel and Hussain Talat contributed with a wicket each to restrict Gladiators to 147. Duminy’s well-made 54 and a good show by Talat and Shadab Khan ensured they crossed the finish line with almost 2 overs to spare.
The United has a well-balanced team with in-form bowlers and a sturdy batting unit that can help them overcome the challenges here against Kings and make it through to the next stage.
Karachi Kings
Speedster Usman Khan delivered for the team as he took a sensational 4-17 to stifle the United batsmen in the must-win game on Friday. Shahid Afridi also shone with the ball, claiming 2-18 and others like Mohammad Irfan, Tymal Mills, and Mohammad Amir took a wicket each to restrict the opponents to 124. The chase saw Denly post 36 off 28 and Azam pitching in with 29 runs. The latter along with Colin Ingram, who scored 31 runs, steered the team across the finish line with 3 overs to spare.
Previously against Peshawar Zalmi, they had suffered a colossal loss by 44 runs after failing to chase down 182 runs. Opener Babar Azam fought a lone battle at the top, scoring a brilliant 66 off 50 but with hardly any support from the rest of the top and middle order batsmen, they could muster only 137 in reply. Players like Ingram and Denly were duck-out and others like Morgan and Bopara failed to impress. Speedster Usman Khan had done well to take a stupendous 3-11 but his efforts went in vain.
The bowling unit has done well to carry the team through to the playoffs, and if the batsmen can come out all guns blazing here against the United pacers, they could well go all the way to the top.
Our Prediction
Islamabad United has an in-form bowling unit and a deep batting line-up too, which makes them a strong contender; however, we feel that the Kings with their recent performance of the pace attack and the experienced batting lineup go into the match as favorites
